During times of drought, extreme weather conditions, rural exodus and crop failures, the time has come to advocate for resilient food systems and sustainable agriculture. Especially in times of the COVID-19 pandemic, which challenges existing structures even more.
Therefore, we are grateful for your support, which will enable us to address these issues in Micani, Bolivia. With your help, a food security and diversification program for the altitudes of Bolivia will be implemented in 6 village schools.
Project progress
The school nutrition project is implemented through 5 milestones:
Following the engagement of a trained agricultural engineer from the local area, the analysis and detailed elaboration of the school garden models and irrigation systems were successfully conducted. Existing water sources, land availability, measurement of soil quality and determination of microclimatic influences were evaluated. Within this framework, the demand for solar tents was identified, as the different altitudes in some villages make cultivation difficult due to the extreme cold. Discussions are still ongoing regarding the technical aspects of the solar tents, given the importance of considering the individual requirements in each village school.
Finally, in October, materials with all components for the irrigation systems were delivered. During November, these were assembled in the villages and - if possible - taken into operation, followed by sowing and planting the gardens. The Corona situation complicates the management of the gardens, as there is no normal school attendance. However, this was solved by locating external responsible persons who will take care of the gardens until school resumes in March 2021. For reasons of fairness, the construction of the solar tents will not be started until the financing is complete.
