Combat Malnutrition in Nigeria

SUMMARY
Since our last report in January 2026, Buhknom Development Foundation (BDF) has continued efforts to combat malnutrition in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and surrounding areas. With limited resources, we provided targeted nutritional support, education, and follow-up to vulnerable women, children, and families. These activities helped alleviate immediate hunger, improve awareness of nutritious practices, and support household resilience during the lean season.

ACTIVITIES COMPLETED
Nutritional Support: Distributed staple food items, nutritional supplements (e.g., multivitamins, fortified foods), and hygiene kits to approximately 85 vulnerable women and children under five.
Nutrition Education: Conducted community workshops and cooking demonstrations on balanced diets, breastfeeding, and hygiene for 60 participants, focusing on pregnant/lactating mothers and caregivers.
Follow-up and Screening: Performed health screenings and monitoring visits in beneficiary communities (including areas like Bukpe and Lanto). Provided referrals for severe cases.
Community Engagement: Strengthened partnerships with local leaders and health providers to identify and support additional at-risk families

IMPACT
These interventions reached over 120 unique individuals this period, contributing to reduced immediate malnutrition risks and better household food security. Many mothers reported improved child health and energy levels. One beneficiary shared: “The supplements and training helped my child gain weight and reduced frequent illnesses. I now know how to prepare affordable nutritious meals.” Overall, the project continues to support hundreds of women and children across FCT communities since inception.

CHALLENGES
Persistent funding constraints limited the scale of distributions and expansion to new communities. High transportation costs in rural areas and seasonal food price increases also affected reach.

NEXT STEPS
Expand supplementary feeding and nutrition education to reach more children under five and pregnant women.
Partner with local hospitals for antenatal support and scale up community agriculture initiatives.
Document more success stories and conduct a focused evaluation.
Intensify fundraising to sustain and grow the program toward our long-term goals.
