By Albert N. Ngwa | Country Director - Nascent Solutions - Cameroon
In the last two months, Nascent Solutions’ vigilante teams have collaborated with women and youth groups and other community stakeholders to raise community awareness of the harmful effects of Trafficking in Persons (TIP) in the 13 target villages in Ngohketunja division of the North West Region of Cameroon. The trained vigilante organized two outreach events in each village and report that they sensitized over 1500 community members.
With a support of $500, Nascent Solutions supported Collette, one of our beneficiaries to complete the 2013-2014 academic year in the remedial program. She was able to register and sit for the national end of secondary education, Ordinary Level General Certificate of Education (GCE) examination in May 2014. The results will be released by the end of July. In the mean time, Nascent Solutions’ country Director is working with Collette to explore possible career paths that she can pursue after the GCE results are out, including opening a dress making shop. In the mean time, Collette is using the summer holidays, to continue her apprenticeship in sewing, while waiting for the GCE results.
Dieudonne, our second beneficiary has continued his apprenticeship in the mechanical shop in Bangante, which builds mills for processing corn flour, extraction of oil from palm nuts and other locally produced foods. Dieudonne mentor, Mr. Momboh reports that he is assiduous and consistent with the mandatory daily savings of 1000 CFA ($2) in their thrift and loan program. This is a percentage of the tips he receives from clients. The long-term goal is that, by the end of the two-year training (2015) Dieudonne would have saved a substantive amount, which he can use as collateral for a loan to begin his own business.
Our goal for the third quarter of 2014 is to raise $2000 to support Collette and Dieudonne, our pioneer beneficiaries, to initiate income-generating activities. We are also seeking assistance to train more vigilante members, develop sensitization materials and radio programs to expand our information and awareness campaigns to the entire Ngohketunja Division.
Acept our profound appreciation for your continuous support towards our effort to combat this horrible and inhumane practice.
