Empowering TIP Victims in Cameroon

By Albert Ngwa Niba | Country Director - Nascent Solutions - Cameroon

During the last two months, Nascent Solutions Inc - Cameroon Country Director visited the target region of the TIP project as well as the pioneer TIP victims in Bambalang and Bamessing. He was accompanied during this trip by Mr. Francis Akuchu, the TIP Program Coordinator.

The first site visited was Bambalang. As the tradition stipulates, we made a courtesy call at the residence of the Quarter-Head of the Mighang Neighborhood, Mr. Kasha Thomas Tabieng. He had been informed of our visit so he was waiting for us. After exchanging salutations with the Quarter Head, we drove on 2 bikes (One we hired from Ndop and the other belonging to Mr. Kasha) to Ms. Nkazi Collette Ndi’s, the TIP survival.

We found Collette in very good health and spirits. She reported that with the assistance from Nascent Solutions she had enrolled in hairdressing training, which she had been learning for over six months. At the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year, Collette felt that it would be good for her to enroll in the Remedial Evening School in Bambalang to study and write her General Certificate of Education Certificate Examination (GCE) Ordinary Level, given that she already speaks the Cameroon official languages, English and French, with relative ease. She has already paid 25,000 FCFA (about $60.00) to register for the GCE 2014 June session, and another 15,000 FCFA ($35.00) fees.

Collette's outstanding requirements for the school year include the 10,000 FCFA (about $25) she still owes, registration fee of 2,500 FCFA ($6) for the mock GCE. This examination is organized by local institutions, which have a GCE writing centre. Her daily bike ride to and from school of 1000 FCFA ($3) and about  $1 for her snacks or lunch for a total of $75 per month. Another $25 will provide Collette’s feminine and hygiene needs per month.

At Nascent, we are sincerely grateful to our donors and hope that we can all be proud of the difference that we are making in Collette’s life. We listened to her and respected her opinion when she decided to enroll into the remdial program. As we can all testify, she is liberated, she can make informed decisions that will impact her life and wellbeing.   With your continuous support we can definitely make a difference.

Thank you for your support.
