By Dr Tony Sewell | Coding Skills for young ex-offenders
The coding skills for ex –offenders continues to succeed. Our students are now focussed on using coding for:
1 Website development
2 Digital enterprise skills
3 App development
4 Coding for enetratainment – art work
We have used and tested a number of coding products that have a particular appeal to ex-offenders. The first one is called Sketchpatch which links computer coding to artwork. This is fantastic because we find that young people like the idea of coding that has a practical outcome i.e a great piece of art that can be printed and displayed. We have also used coding to make music , basic animation and building your own website. These are great life-skills and shows young people how to be creators of technology, not just users.
We continue to engage our students in speed dating from role models in the tech industry and those who are running Tech start-ups. This has been fantastic. Students can learn how they could try and start their own small company. We have also asked these tech experts to become role models.
We needs to raise $3000 dollars so that we can take our students to a special Tech Camp (residential weekend) They will be assigned a Tech mentor who will work with them over 6 months to:
1 Boost their technical skills
2 Give them a network into work or an apprenticeship.
This is for 20 students.
Any advice on developing the Tech Camp, please reach out.
