2011 was a busy and successful year for CEDPA’s Alumni Coaching Program. Over the course of the year, 45 CEDPA-trained coaches worked with over 100 alumni, providing them with technical guidance and professional support in a structured year-long program. One of our many successful pairings this year was Dr. Hoda Yacoub (client) and Dr. Hala Yousry (coach); they both have experience in nongovernmental organizations that focus on gender and conservation in Egypt.
Hoda works for Conservation of Natural and Cultural Heritages (CNCH) in Upper Egypt. Her organization provides literacy classes and vocational training for girls in Bedouin communities. After the revolution and political upheaval in Egypt in early 2011, Hoda encountered myriad challenges. The centralization of authority after the revolution made it difficult for Hoda to gain access to her project funds. With her coach Hala, she learned to “act instead of react” by persistently making direct contact with the appropriate ministry until she gained access to her funds. Over the course of their coaching relationship, Hoda has become more self-assured and confident in her work.
While coach and client usually have their monthly meetings via Internet and telephone, Hala and Hoda arranged to meet in person in October 2011. During this meeting, they discussed the possibility of an ongoing professional partnership. Through the CEDPA Alumni Coaching Program, they have established what Hala calls a “lifelong relationship.”
As we enter 2012, we want to send our heartfelt thanks to all of you for your generous support and hope more people will join us in this exciting program in the new year!
