Career Insight Day
Career Insight Day

Dear Friend,

The Independent Review of Children’s Social Care (2022) predicts the number of looked-after children in England to rise to 100,000 by 2032. In conjunction with the current economic, international, and social climate we know that demand for our services will rise further, with more young people finding themselves facing a “cliff edge” when leaving care.

Over the last decade, the number of care-experienced youth has risen continuously, whilst the percentage of those not in employment, education, and training stayed consistent at 40%. This is not good enough!

Our teams are already at capacity whilst referral partners encourage us to work with more, often younger, people. Post-pandemic, care- experienced people face additional challenges (mental health, uncontrolled debt, insufficient financial means) whilst statutory services experience a lack of staff and funding. We believe that sustainable employment offers these young people the best hope to tackle the challenges in front of them and build meaningful lives for themselves in the long-term.

Your support is more vital than ever. Thank you for your continued belief in the potential of care-experienced young people!

Nikki’s story

Nikki is 24 and recently dropped out of university.

When I left care 5 years ago, I quickly found myself in rent arrears and other dept. I worked for a while but wanted to study... I worked so hard to get accepted and I was proud when I did. After my first year studying Business Management, my financial pressures increased again... My mental health suffered, and I dropped out.”

That’s when Nikki was introduced to Rahcel, a Careers Specialist with more than 6 years' experience of supporting care-experienced young people into sustainable employment. Rachel was impressed by Nikki’s drive and motivation to progress, but also recognised the challenges she faced. Nikki soon found a role working in digital marketing with the JobCentre. As this was only a short-term contract, Nikki continued broadening her knowledge by attending Career Insight Days with our partners at Wunderman Thompson, bespoke interview prep events, and explored her career options including with the Civil Service.

The Civil service Care Leavers internship offers young people a fantastic opportunity to kickstart their professional journey. Our team has supported over 200 young people into the scheme and Nikki was no exception. Working closely with Rachel and drawing on her previous experience, she successfully applied for a 12-months internship and began working with the Crown Prosecution Service last month!

“I was so happy when I heard back from the Civil Service. This is literally a dream come true! I was worried about money and how I’d afford to travel to work every day, but Rachel told me about Closing the Gap and helped me with travel for the entire first month. I’m so grateful!”

Sven’s story

“I’ve been working with Sven since 2020. I remember his ambition of moving on from retail and finding something more meaningful and fulfilling,” says Felix, Careers Specialist at Drive Forward.

“We began by identifying his strengths, experience, and interests before starting to look at what’s out there for him. I knew that Sven would be perfect for the Civil Service internship coming up the following year, but Sven wasn’t convinced. He preferred to ease out of his routine and so he began working in hospitality with some admin responsibilities. I encouraged him to attend more events and talks hosted by Drive Forward to learn more about other career options available to him. Of course, I kept nudging him towards the Civil Service also.    When applications finally opened, I just said to him ‘What do you have to lose?’ and he couldn’t help but agree. Unsurprisingly, he was successful and started his internship a few months after.

“We stayed in touch throughout the year, and I checked in with Sven once a month or so. I knew that his contract may not be extended and was already thinking about where Sven could go next. So, just before his internship ended, we called him to find out what he was looking to do. To my surprise, Sven was eager to continue a career in the public sector ideally ‘working with real people’. Coincidently, I had just received an email from my contact at a Local Authority looking for a Youth Participation and Engagement Worker. It didn’t take long for Sven to complete the application and he started his new job 2 months ago.

Anna’s story

When Anna was referred to us, her Social Worker stressed the fact that she had never worked before in her life. She also lives with social anxiety, which prompted our Careers Specialist Justin to meet her in her borough of residence at a well-known location. It only took a few sessions of exploring career aspirations and work experience opportunities together, before Anna secured herself her very first job.

Initially nervous about travelling around London, Anna seized the opportunity to attend a Careers Fair organised by our Employer Partners The Crown Estate. Pulling all her courage together, Anna chatted to different employers, participated in speed interviews, and was offered a role on the spot! Over the Christmas period, she would work as a Warehouse Operative at the prestigious Fortum and Mason.

Your support allowed Anna to accept the offer and not worry about how to afford regular travel and lunch throughout her first experience in the world of work.
