Closing Accessibility Gaps for the Blind

By Geoffrey Mulenga | Project Leader

Dear Supporters,

Your generous support is helping us bridge the gap between isolation and inclusion for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Over the past three months, we’ve distributed 24 white canes, provided digital screen reader training to 15 participants, and installed our first tactile signage system in a public health clinic—marking a milestone in accessibility advocacy for our community.

One of our newest beneficiaries is Chanda, a 22-year-old who lost her sight in early adolescence. Until recently, she relied entirely on family to navigate her surroundings. After just four weeks of mobility and screen reader training, Chanda now moves independently to her local market and has begun using WhatsApp to reconnect with old friends. “For the first time,” she said, “I feel like I am living, not just existing.”

Our team has also been working closely with local schools and government offices to advocate for inclusive infrastructure. As a result, a local council has agreed to install Braille signs in one of the busiest bus stations—setting a precedent we hope to replicate elsewhere.

As we continue to close these gaps, we are preparing to launch an Accessibility Week campaign to raise awareness and reach more individuals like Chanda. Thank you for helping to make the world more inclusive, one step, one voice, and one tool at a time.

With deep appreciation,
The Accessibility Empowerment Team
