At a ceremony on 24 October at Roald Dahl Plass in Cardiff Bay, HRH The Princess Royal, a Tenovus Cancer CarePatron for more than a decade, officially launched the charity’s third Mobile Support Unit. The unit was secured by the success of the appeal in raising over £1m from benefactors ,small and large, throughout Wales and beyond.
It is 60% bigger than our first Mobile Support Unit, launched in 2009, with seven chemotherapy chairs and is capable of seeing 30 patients a day and delivering more than 8,500 treatments a year.
The existing two Mobile Support Units already bring treatment closer to home in communities across Wales. They treat patients in Cardiff, Brecon, Cwmbran, Swansea, Bridgend, Carmarthen, Narberth, Aberystwyth, Port Talbot, Lampeter, Milford Haven and Haverfordwest.
Initially the new Unit will support existing chemotherapy services. But the vision is a pan-Wales service, reaching those most in need across the country. We all want every patient to have the opportunity to benefit from this innovative service which helps save lives, in addition to saving people precious time and money, and reducing stress.
The success of the appeal has encouraged the appeal team to continue its efforts to secure a fourth unit, extending the coverage of the units and permitting the first unit to be rested for refurbishment and updating to provide the best current standards of care
