Quarterly Report for Climate Smart Farming for the Long-term project in Uganda by Kikandwa Environmental Association (KEA) On GlobalGiving 9th July 2026
Kikandwa Environmental Association (KEA) is a developmental community-based organization founded in 1999 with the purpose of addressing rural development issues and natural resource management. KEA was born out of the need to address the alarming low levels of agriculture productivity, high level of food insecurity, low income in the rural communities in addition to protection against rapid degradation of natural resources on which more than 75% of the people of Mityana in Uganda are depending directly and indirectly for their livelihood. The organization is registered at district level as a Community Based Organization.
Goal of the organization: To contribute towards improving the livelihood of the vulnerable and rural poor communities’ especially poor women, men and youth.
Vision:Improved Environment and Natural Resources for Sustainable Development
Mission: To contribute to sustainable development; thereby improving the livelihood of the vulnerable rural communities through increased agricultural productivity and natural resource management practices.
Problem Statement and proposed Action
Climate Change adaptation and Food security and nutrition.
Mityana district in Uganda is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change with a high degree of exposure coupled with low adaptive capacity. According to the Notre Dame Global Adaptation Initiative (ND-GAIN 2021), Uganda is ranked as the 10th most vulnerable country to the impacts of climate change and 35th least readying terms of preparedness for climate change effects. Extreme weather events are increasingly frequent and severe across much of the Africa region, including Mityana and Uganda in general, since 2019 up to date tens of thousands of Ugandans were displaced by floods and landslides while others have been severely affected by frequent drought in the different parts of Uganda Mityana inclusive, while a 2020 locust swarm destroyed crops and livelihoods and the Army warms are still doing the same up to now. As a local Community Based Organization known as Kikandwa Environmental Association (KEA), we have spent 26 year making significant contributions to reducing the impacts of the climate crisis locally.

Project Goal and objective:
The goal of the project is Reduced Vulnerability to the Impacts of Climate Change among farmers in Kikandwa Sub County in Mityana district. Its objectives are:
i) Increased household incomes in 1000 households in Kikandwa sub county by the end of the project
ii) Improved food security for farmers participating in the project by 2030
iii) Increased crop yields, especially maize, beans and other staple food for farmers in Kikandwa sub county in Mityana district by the end of the project
iv) Improved land management and agronomic practices of farmers in Kikandwa sub county.
To achieve the goal and the objectives, Kikandwa Environmental Association (KEA) decided to Fund raise money through GlobalGiving, a US based organization which allow organizations and individuals to donate any amount of money from USD Dollar $1,or $5,$10,$20,$50,$100,$200,$500,$1000 etc to assist the poor and vulnerable smallholder farmers in Kikandwa community.
KEA applied to start fundraising through GlobalGiving and was approved on 15th March 2026 to start fundraising for the project in the name “Climate-Smart Farming for the Long-term in Uganda!" project, on 29th June 2026 KEA receive USD $3404.30 and on 27th June 2026 received USD $585.00 both totaling USD $3989.30 in this reporting period.
KEA had a target of fundraising USD $35,000.Therefore it remained with a balance of USD $31,010.70 to meet its target. So far the GlobalGiving Fund Raised Money has supported some few key activities to address the present challenges of implementing Climate Change Adaptation by Training smallholder farmers and conducting farmer field school learning visits to Adapt and Mitigate to climate change, Established a nursery site, Purchased planting materials and seeds, carried out community mobilization and sensitization to local community on various climate change adaptation measures, bought and distributed 200 tree seedlings while waiting those in the nursery bed to get ready, all activities done is aimed at increasing food security, biodiversity, and household incomes of the households in the targeted area, and also facilitated Kaganga John and his co-worker to implement the project in this reporting period.

We thank all our donors who donated us all that money which allowed us to do the work to partially meet our project goal and objectives of helping the poor and vulnerable small scale farmers in Kikandwa community as well as combating climate change while increasing the biodiversity in the area. The fund raising is still continuing till we meet our oval goal of getting $ 35,000 dollars, we are remaining with a balance of $ 31, 01.70 dollars to go.
