Migrant Clinicians Network (MCN) advances climate disaster response and emergency preparedness through an approach rooted in inclusivity, community mobilization, and a strong commitment to health justice. Our work spans the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, with a focus on ensuring that populations most impacted by climate disasters. The impacts of the climate crisis are not experienced equally. Individuals living on the margins, such as farmworkers, domestic workers, and construction workers, many of which are immigrant and migrant workers, often face disproportionate risk during climate disasters. In addition to risk, they also face limited access to timely emergency services and health care. However, these same communities frequently play critical roles in post-disaster recovery, rebuilding infrastructure and restoring essential systems.
During the current reporting period, MCN has continued to advance this initiative through a combination of training, technical assistance, partnership development, and resource dissemination. MCN is currently in the process of developing and delivering delivered trainings for community health clinics, clinicians, outreach workers, and community partners focused on climate-related health risks, emergency preparedness, heat stress, and culturally and linguistically appropriate engagement strategies. These trainings, 4-part series on Health Center Prepardness & Response, emphasize practical approaches to identifying and supporting high-risk populations before and after disaster events. The forum series brings together national partners and thought leaders to amplify best practices and promote coordinated responses to climate-related events through 4 core topics: Extreme Weather, Community Partnerships, Workforce Readiness, and Patient Support.
In addition to training, MCN has provided ongoing, tailored technical assistance to community health centers and partner organizations to support the integration of inclusive disaster planning into existing systems. This includes guidance on developing outreach strategies and aligning clinical services with community needs during emergencies. To support this MCN regularly shares and disseminates with clinical networks accessible, multilingual resources to support disaster prepardness and response. As part of National Occupational Health and Safety Week, MCN promoted a curated collection of Field-Ready Tools. These tools can be used to support staff training, patient education, and community response. Thanks to your continued support, MCN will continue to expand it's network, strengthen partnerships, and refine tools and resources to further support community health centers and communities in building resilient, equitable climate disaster response systems.
