Help Communities Prep for Climate Disaster

Migrant Clinicians Network continues to advance its efforts to help communities across the United States, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands strengthen their readiness for climate related emergencies. Throughout this project period, we have continued to highlight the essential role of community health workers and clinicians who support farmworkers and outdoor laborers who are central to building resilient communities and are at high risk during extreme weather events. In September, our team shared guidance and practical strategies through a national webinar, Emergency Management: Protecting Migratory and Seasonal Agricultural Workers During the Hurricane Season, offering participants clear approaches for safeguarding vulnerable workers. The session offered participants a clear look at the obstacles workers and employers encounter before, during, and after disasters, while outlining practical strategies that health centers and agricultural employers can adopt to reduce harm and improve climate readiness. By highlighting the role of health centers as central hubs during emergencies, the training emphasized the importance of whole community planning, assessing community health needs, and prioritizing safety across the broader agricultural community. This work remains an active and evolving priority for MCN as we deepen our climate disaster preparedness initiatives and expand support for vulnerable populations.
