The project team is back safe and sound from a third trip to Segovia, Honduras at the end of June 2011. We had a chance to inspect the water distribution system we constructed in March of 2010. Our activities included testing the water quality and chlorination levels, checking tap flow rates, adjusting valves on the storage tank, connecting the tank float switch and completing surveys for just about every household. The surveys included questions in regards to health improvements and future plans for the community.
Everyone in the community was very welcoming and excited to talk with us about the system and other ways we might be able to help. We worked with several Peace Corps Volunteers during the week and they helped immensely with translating and collecting data.
Our trip coincided with the start of the rainy season. This was very beneficial for us to experience as the water table is just about at ground level and above ground level as the season progresses. It was very apparent that drainage is a big issue and causes latrines to overfill and flooding in homes. We have preliminary decided to address this problem by designing a gray water system that would benefit all community members as our next phase of the Segovia program.
