Field Notes: Clean Hands in Cambodia

Waterborne illness is the single largest threat to children’s health globally, and it is a huge obstacle for children in Cambodia. So we’re working with kids and caregivers to teach clean and healthy behaviors that limit the spread of disease, alongside providing them with clean, reliable, safe water. Below is a picture of Sea (pronounced SAY-uh), our Health & Hygiene Coordinator. He is working closely with Cooperation for Sustainable Cambodian Society (CSCS) to conduct hygiene trainings for our partner sites—and not just for kids but for caregivers, staff, administrators, parents, and the community.

Sea and CSCS are working with five pilot schools to develop this program, which we plan on expanding to all of our 63 partner sites in Cambodia. Each of the five schools has a child-led group of six students, led by one teacher. They learn about everything hygiene—from hand washing to tooth brushing to germ transmission. Then they share what they learn with their peers, in fun and creative ways! Just this month, each group selected a topic around which they had to create a performance for their school; we hear that the group at Sangkheum Center in Siem Reap  wrote an amazing song about diarrhea, and we hope to share the (translated) lyrics with you in our next project update!

Sea reports that the trainings are making a visible difference – when he visits the schools, kids are crowded around hand washing and drinking stations that Splash built, eagerly waiting for a turn to drink the clean water, and to practice the (very popular) six steps of hand washing!

None of this would be possible without the generous support of people like you! Thanks for supporting Splash and clean water (and hygiene!) for kids.
