A Filter that Changed Everything

By Buntha Thouern | CWEF Director Cambodia

This past year CWEF staff traveled to a village in Kampong Thom Province to deliver more than just equipment—they brought the promise of better health. That day, 29 families in the village received biosand water filters, along with practical training on hygiene and filter maintenance. Ms. Yet and her family of six also received a biosand water filter that day.

For years, the daily life of Ms. Yet and her family revolved around an uncertain water source. They lived in a rural community and depended on a small well, collecting rainwater when possible. But during the dry season, the well often ran dry. Only murky, unsafe water remained.  And they relied on it to survive.

The murky unsafe water caused regular stomachaches, diarrhea, and recurring intestinal illnesses. The children frequently missed school, and their parents faced the ongoing stress of mounting medical expenses. When possible, the family purchased drinking water.  But this placed an additional financial burden on their already limited resources.

Everything began to change when, through your generosity, they received a biosand water filter.

From the start, the family expressed a hopefuly curiosity. Ms. Yet’s family learned how to properly use and maintain their new filter after participating in CWEF's training. They noticed a difference in the water almost immediately. The water looked cleaner. It tasted better. For the first time, they trusted that they were drinking safe water.

In the months that followed, the safe drinking water had a profound impact on their lives.

Illnesses became less frequent. The children returned to school more consistently, no longer sidelined by preventable sickness. Medical expenses decreased.  This eased the financial strain on the household. The need to purchase drinking water plummeted which allowed the family to save money for other essential needs.

But beyond the physical and financial improvements, a deeper change emerged: peace of mind.

Ms. Yet shared her gratitude with a smile, expressing heartfelt thanks to CWEF and to God for this life-changing gift of clean water. Thanks to you - the water that once created a daily struggle has now beome a source of stability and hope for Ms. Yet and her family!!

The power of access to safe drinking water: healthier families, stronger families, more money in the bank and real hope for the future.
