Making Progress

Dear Supporters,

Following initial feasibility and design, solar generation systems have now been installed in Berichaal Chepang. The Health Post was connected to the energy supply in September 2019 and the system was commissioned the following month. The system is functioning well, powering lighting, fans and a refrigerator and delivering energy-enabled health services to the whole community in and around Berichaal.

The flood warning system installed in late 2019 is a low-cost, easy operating solution, comprising: a solar panel, battery (for energy storage so the system can operate outside daylight hours), an information receiving/ processing unit, and an alarm system (a verbal warning message followed by a siren). The system receives real time data on rainfall and river water level, which is recorded by hydro-meteorological stations upstream. When there is a risk of flooding, the system calculates the lead time and automatically triggers the warning system.

In case of non-flood emergency, such as fire or earthquake, the warning system can be triggered manually via text message by authorised personnel. Initial training has been provided to the community on system management, and the importance and implication of the warning message delivered via the system. Unfortunately, it is not yet fully operational due to delays caused by Covid-19 restrictions.

We will provide access to energy-enabled health care for more than 5,800 people; access to energy-enabled flood- warning for more than 1,600 people on a flood-plain and access to a consistent, affordable and clean energy supply from a solar microgrid for domestic and productive use to 146 people.

Thank you to all our donors, fundraisers and supporters.

With Gratitude,

Nepal Clean Water
