On December 5, Chikumbuso hosted a Parents Open House, inviting our students’ guardians to visit the school. They could watch skits, attend classes, meet teachers, and receive their pupils’ results. Our school year ended on December 6, finishing after a year filled with challenges from cholera to famine. Yet, we have so much to be grateful for!
This year, the Zambian Ministry of Education introduced a new evaluation tool called ‘Continual Assessment,’ which means that students’ final results are not solely based on their final exam. Our Grade 7 students demonstrated their proficiency throughout the year, and our teachers had no reservations about their ability to succeed in the next academic year, even though the official results won’t be released until early next year.
Our teachers were introduced to a new reading program called SRA Reading Laboratory, which fosters friendly competition among students as they enhance their comprehension skills. Children are enjoying the stories as they move through the color-coded levels with friends. Additionally, we enjoyed Hand’s On Fridays with engaging activities throughout the year. Many of our students have excelled with more movement added to their academic programs.
One of the most significant changes we’ve made recently is introducing a school breakfast. Many students arrived on Monday mornings without having eaten over the weekend, leading to some becoming faint in class or complaining of stomach cramps due to hunger. Providing a simple breakfast helps our learners get through their first classes before lunchtime, significantly improving their attention spans.
Our students are so blessed by your support. They could not do it without you! May each of you have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
