Our 2024 school year started off with a big challenge – cholera. Nationally, schools closed for several weeks. Communities were given specific health care directives to follow. Chikumbuso met all requirements thanks to donors like you who keep our classrooms supplied with all they need! Schools reopened on Feb 12th and our students are back in school.
Now, an even bigger challenge has risen - hunger. On February 29, President Hichilema proclaimed the Zambian food shortage a national disaster. Last Monday morning, in our kindergarten class, a young boy wept loudly on the floor of the classroom. When asked why he was crying, he told his teacher that he would not be able to last until lunch time. He was too hungry. With no food at home, he had not eaten all weekend. The harsh reality is that food shortages and higher prices mean many of our students go hungry when they are not in school. Chikumbuso is tackling this challenge through our daily feeding program - we serve over 60,000 healthy meals a year to students and staff; sponsorship - students take home a food stipend monthly; and, emergency food distributions to families in desperate need. Your donations ensure our students have what they need to succeed.
In this time of deep hunger and scarcity, Chikumbuso can be a point of light and hope for so many in our community. Thank you for partnering with us! To learn more, check out our website!
