New York Common Pantry: Meeting Rising Need

By Rose Wirekoh | Institutional Giving Officer

As food insecurity continues to rise across New York City, New York Common Pantry remains committed to ensuring that every neighbor has access to nutritious food and the support they need to thrive. While emergency food remains at the heart of our work, we know that lasting food security requires more than meals alone. Through integrated services such as benefits enrollment, case management, nutrition education, and community partnerships, we help individuals and families build greater long term stability.

Fiscal Year 2026 was a record breaking year for New York Common Pantry. Together with our supporters, volunteers, and community partners, we provided more than 12.5 million meals, the highest number in our organization's history. This milestone reflects both the increasing demand for emergency food and our commitment to ensuring that no New Yorker goes hungry.

This year brought significant challenges for families already struggling to make ends meet. Rising housing costs, inflation, and the continued high cost of groceries forced more individuals and families to seek emergency food assistance. At the same time, proposed reductions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as SNAP, created uncertainty for millions of households across the country. SNAP is one of the nation's strongest tools for reducing hunger, and any reduction in benefits places additional pressure on food pantries and food banks. As families receive fewer benefits or worry about future assistance, many turn to organizations like New York Common Pantry to help fill the gap.

The effects of these changes are already being felt throughout our programs. Our Choice Pantry locations in East Harlem and the Bronx continue to welcome record numbers of participants each week, while our Mobile Pantry program now serves more than 75 community partner sites across New York City. Demand continues to outpace our capacity, with dozens of community organizations remaining on our waitlist for regular food distributions. Every new request represents a neighborhood where families are struggling to access affordable, nutritious food.

Beyond food distribution, our Help 365 program helps participants apply for public benefits, navigate social services, and connect with additional community resources that promote long term stability. Our Live Healthy! nutrition education program teaches practical cooking skills and healthy meal preparation, helping participants make the most of the food they receive while improving their overall health.

This work is made possible through the dedication of our volunteers and the strength of our partnerships with community organizations, healthcare providers, schools, and faith based institutions. Together, we are expanding access to nutritious food while connecting participants with the resources they need to build healthier and more secure lives.

Every meal we distribute represents more than food. It represents relief for a parent worried about feeding their children, dignity for an older adult living on a fixed income, and hope for families facing difficult financial choices. For many of our participants, New York Common Pantry is not simply a place to receive groceries. It is a trusted source of support, compassion, and community.

As we look ahead, we expect demand for emergency food to remain high. The combined effects of rising living costs and reductions in federal nutrition programs will continue to place additional strain on nonprofit organizations that serve on the front lines of hunger relief. Your support through GlobalGiving allows us to respond quickly, purchase nutritious food, expand our programs, and ensure that every person who comes through our doors is met with dignity and care.

On behalf of everyone at New York Common Pantry, thank you for standing with us during this critical time. Your generosity helps ensure that thousands of New Yorkers have access to healthy food today while building a stronger and more food secure future for tomorrow.
