At WEP, one of our core founding values has been to work alongside local communities within India to prepare young women with the confidence, relationships, and opportunities they need in order to shape lives and careers of their own choosing. LAMP Academy students have access to seven future-focused career pathways they can choose from at WEP, where they get exposure to new learning opportunities in and outside of the classroom, skills training, curriculum support, and mentorship in their fields of interest.
Planting Green Corridors to Promote Healthier Communities
LAMP Academy recently launched the One Green Corridor Initiative, which provides students with kitchen garden training where they can learn about sustainable farming practices, taking care of fruit orchards, and native flora that encourage healthy pollination and biodiversity in their communities. After receiving vegetable and fruit seedlings, many of our LAMP Academy students have started their own gardens. Not only are they able to benefit from producing and consuming healthy, locally homegrown produce, but they are also now able to help their families through a more sustainable income-earning practice (especially for our students interested in pursuing careers within Environment Conservation & Agriculture).
Beekeeping training has been another popular activity across our Academies, where LAMP students are continuing to learn the art and science behind beekeeping and maintenance, promoting healthy pollinator ecosystems, and how to establish their own apiaries. Akshaya is one of our star students who now manages four hives on her own family’s land! For other students like Ruth and Kavya, beekeeping is now also a new income-generating activity they can do together with their mothers, turning this into a family bonding activity rooted both in environmental care and building sustainable livelihoods. This season, the group also harvested their first batch of honey, with one hive alone having produced half a kilogram. We’re excited to see what the next season brings!
Paving Career Pathways in Communications through Digital Skills Training
When young women gain access to the digital and hands-on tools to bring their ideas to life, they’re not only able to imagine better, but also take real steps towards achieving their dreams. A recent 4-day online Canva training conducted in collaboration with the Plus Trust introduced 16 students, staff, and an alumnae fellow to design invitation cards, social media posts, planners, presentations, posters, logos, and videos through leveraging the graphic design tool, Canva. Students were very excited to explore their creativity while also learning how to design professionally and increase their digital competencies in order to land higher paying marketing & communications-related jobs.
Preparing Young Women for Meaningful Future-Focused Careers
Women's Education Project creates opportunities for young women to grow as leaders, build meaningful networks, and make informed decisions about their futures. As part of this mission, we conduct holistic life skills workshops where we can learn about best practices that are essential for success such as time management, goal-setting, self-awareness, study planning, among other such topics. These workshops are often led as large group peer discussions in which our students get to share their own stories, speak up about their successes and challenges, and connect in a comfortable space where they can inspire each other to embrace and overcome these challenges and work towards achieving their fullest potential.
We’re pleased to see all the achievements of our LAMP Academy students and alumnae, and we're excited to keep growing this community of talented and accomplished women who choose how they live, learn, lead, and earn!
