Recovery Path of Two Brothers from Kherson

By Liza Poliakova | Head of Corporate Fundraising

On October 4, 2025, the Gatsan family from Kherson faced an unimaginable tragedy. While traveling by car, the family, including a pregnant mother and father, fell under heavy artillery fire. A direct hit changed everything in a second. While the parents miraculously remained physically unharmed, their sons, 8-year-old Artem and his older brother Anatoliy, sustained life-altering injuries.

Since that day, the brothers have traversed a long map of hospitals across Ukraine, undergoing a combined total of over 12 surgeries.

Younger brother Artem lost his right leg and suffered severe trauma to his chest and lungs. His left leg remains in an external fixation device as doctors fight to save its function. Despite the pain, Artem is a beacon of light. He attends school online and has become the frontman of Superhumans music therapy band, even performing a dream concert with his idol, famous Ukrainian singer YAKTAK.

Anatoliy, older brother, lost part of his right foot and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Today, he is a university student studying programming. He has mastered in ergotherapy, learning to cook both from a wheelchair and on his feet.

Since November 6, the family has called Superhumans Lviv home. Our approach isn't just about physical healing; it’s about rebuilding a life.

We balance intensive physical therapy with the boys' education, ensuring they don't fall behind in school or university. Olena, the mother, is expecting a child, receives psychological support and career counseling, ensuring the whole family unit remains strong.

While Artem’s journey to walking fully on a prosthesis is paused while his left leg heals, our team is constantly adjusting his plan to meet his growing body's needs.

Why Your Support Matters

The Gatsan brothers have been with us for four months, but their path is far from over. Because they are still growing, they will require frequent servicing, prosthetic adjustments, and ongoing therapy for years to come.

Your donations directly fund the complex rehabilitation for Anatoliy and for Artem, as they require not only physical exercise, but also mental support. You are not just funding "medical cases", you are fueling the dreams of a future programmer and a young rockstar.

Thank you for standing with the children of Ukraine!
