Nazhoen Lamtoen's current rented shelter in Thimphu is ageing and no longer suitable for the long-term care of children who need temporary protection. Your support will help build a permanent, child-friendly shelter on donated land, providing safe accommodation and space for care, counselling, education, rehabilitation and reintegration for up to 50 children at a time.
Children in difficult circumstances in Bhutan may need temporary protection when it is unsafe or unsuitable for them to remain at home. Nazhoen Lamtoen's current shelter in Thimphu operates from a rented building dating from the 1970s. Structural cracks, water seepage, inadequate child-friendly facilities and limited space for counselling and rehabilitation increasingly restrict its ability to provide children with the safe, stable and supportive environment they need.
This project will build a permanent, purpose-built children's shelter on donated land in Thimphu. Designed for up to 50 children at a time, it will provide child-friendly accommodation and dedicated spaces for counselling, learning, recreation, vocational training, health and wellbeing. The new facility will strengthen protection, rehabilitation, education and reintegration support while children receive temporary care and longer-term solutions are prepared.
A permanent shelter will give Nazhoen Lamtoen a sustainable home from which to protect and support children for decades to come. More than 200 additional children are expected to benefit over the next ten years through safer living conditions and stronger rehabilitation and reintegration support. Owning the facility will also eliminate annual rental costs, reduce dependence on unsuitable temporary accommodation and strengthen Bhutan's child protection response.
