Hawi came to our Rescue Centre after surviving alone on the streets of Nairobi. He had traveled an incredible 349 kilometers from his home, without family to protect him and no safe place to sleep. In one of Africa's busiest cities, each day brought the risk of hunger, exploitation, violence, and despair. Yet, amid the chaos, someone recognized that he was a child in need and helped bring him to St. Vincent's Rescue Centre, where he was finally safe.
From the moment he arrived, our priority was to restore his sense of security and dignity. He received a warm meal, clean clothes, a comfortable bed, and the caring attention every child deserves. More than meeting his physical needs, we reassured him that he was no longer alone. For a child who had faced so much uncertainty, simply having a safe place to rest was the start of his healing.
In line with Kenyan child protection laws and our commitment to acting in every child's best interest, we immediately began working to trace his family. Whenever it is safe and appropriate, children should be with their families rather than in residential care. We coordinated closely with the relevant child protection authorities and were able to locate his father and start the process of reuniting them. While these arrangements were being made, our Rescue Centre continued to provide him with protection, care, and hope.
His story reminds us that every child deserves safety, love, and the chance to grow up in a caring family. Your generosity makes these moments of hope possible. Every donation helps us rescue vulnerable children from the streets, provide emergency shelter and care, and support family tracing and reunification whenever it is safe to do so. Together, we can ensure that more children find not only refuge from danger but also the chance to rebuild their lives with hope and dignity.
