Until very recently, there was no legal framework for foster care in Nepal. That's why we run a children's home, child helpline and similar services – the aim is to create a place that feels as much like a home as possible.
Recently, the situation on the ground has started to change, and it looks like we might finally be able to start working towards establishing the first-ever foster care system in Southern Nepal. There is already one organisation in Nepal that has successfully introduced a foster care programme in very close collaboration with the government in other parts of the country. We have been in discussions with them, and they will support us in launching our programme. They will provide training for our staff and local government officials, as well as guidance on the best approaches to working with communities. We are really excited and cannot wait to get started!
For the programme to be successful, we will need to work extensively with local communities to ensure everyone is on board and that all safeguarding procedures are followed very closely. We have already had meetings with the local government, and everyone is really supportive. However, the officials do not yet have a full understanding of what foster care involves, so we anticipate that the initial planning and training stages will take at least a year. We will keep everyone updated. This could potentially be a huge positive change for children in Southern Nepal.
During my recent visit to Nepal, I spent quite a lot of time with our boys at the children's home, and it is incredible to see how much they have grown and developed over the years. The boys were excited to show off their volleyball, painting and music skills. Most are doing really well at school now. We also made a number of new posters for the home following a few workshops I ran with them on screen time, table manners and inclusion. They were later rewarded with an outing and some pizza!
I wanted to say a huge thank you to all of our supporters. None of this would be possible without you.
