We want to go to school! - This is what we have been hearing from our children at the Helpline. This is such an amazing achievement and luckily the new school year has just started. That meant ordering specially made uniforms for the children, books, registering them with local schools and finally the children are able to attend the school, learn new things and make new friends.
During my visit to Nepal last week I visited the Child Helpline and am so proud to say that all the children look very happy and most have gained so much more confidence, a remarkable change. We now also have 8 children that come everyday for day time classes and they are enjoying those a lot!
We finished work on our survey of street children and so happy to say that out of 119 children that we interviewed only 3 are still sleeping on the streets (we have been working with these children for quite some time and are hoping we can get them off the streets as well). The rest of the children were found working on the streets, mostly with their siblings or parents, 13 of them are attending school. Whilst there is a decrease of children sleeping on the streets, because of COVID 19 and extremely bad economical situation in Nepal, there is a huge increase of whole families forced to beg, collect rubbish or sell basic items on the streets and they tend to involve their children in this work as well. We are planning to design different activities for the children and get them into education but it will take some time. As a small charity we can only focus on one place at a time but we are doing whatever we can.
Thank you so much for all the support, more exciting updates coming up soon!
