The Power of Friendship

By David Schaeffer | Vice President of Development

Sapphire is a spunky girl who likes to let her imagination run wild. One minute she’s a Disney princess, the next she’s a doctor making everyone feel better.

Sapphire was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia last year and has endured chemotherapy, steroid treatments, and long hospital stays. She is one of hundreds of kids and teens who benefit from a Chemo Pal Mentor, a trained, trusted adult who adds friendship and fun to treatments.

Thanks to supporters like you, our award-winning Chemo Pal® Mentor Program can give kids a dependable, caring friend to lean on, and parents a much-needed break to grab a cup of coffee, take a nap, spend time with their other children, or talk to the doctor. Our dedicated volunteers become a part of the child’s life and spend time with them in the hospital, in clinics, and even at home.

Last year, CCA’s Chemo Pal Mentor Program served 259 families, and was named Oregon Mentor’s Exceptional Mentoring Program of the Year.

With your support, we can match even more seriously ill children and teens one-to-one with compassionate adults who offer supportive relationships throughout their chemotherapy or other treatments.
