Friendship as Medicine

By David Schaeffer | VP Development

Wyatt and Chemo Pal Kevin
Wyatt and Chemo Pal Kevin

The hospital can be a scary place for a sick child. For two-year-old Wyatt, having a Chemo pal provided friendship and joy during his many treatments for Hepatoblastoma, a form of liver cancer.

Wyatt’s face would light up when Chemo Pal Kevin arrived with a new toy or game to play with at each visit. Wyatt’s mom, Tiffanie, found Kevin’s visits therapeutic not just for Wyatt, but for his family too, “It’s great to know that someone has volunteered their time and love for your child while they fight their illness.”

Thanks to supporters like you, our award-winning Chemo Pal® Mentor Program gives kids a dependable, caring friend to lean on, and parents a much-needed break to grab a cup of coffee, take a nap, or spend time with their other children. Our dedicated volunteers become a part of the child’s life and spend time with them in the hospital, and even at home.

Last year, CCA’s Chemo Pal program served 259 families, a 22% increase from the previous year, and was designated a High Quality Mentoring Program by Oregon Mentors.

With your support, CCA can match even more seriously ill children and teens one-to-one with compassionate adults who offer supportive relationships throughout their chemotherapy or other treatments.
