From Homelessness to Stability

Let's do the math........

The official poverty level is $23,000 a year for a family of four. If you are a single parent in North Carolina with 3 children earning minimum wage, you would have to work 9 1/2 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year just to reach $23,000.

Many of the families who come to Genesis Home, a shelter for homeless families in Durham, N.C. have fallen behind. They simply cannot keep up with the cost of living and find themselves deeper and deeper in debt, struggling in low paying jobs just to house and feed their children.  

When the families reach us, they know they have to rebuild their lives. For the six month period that they live with us our case managers work with them in financial literacy, guidance in debt reduction, and most importantly, helping them find the training and skills to earn a wage that is substantial enough to support their children.Each and every day we help families turn the corner and see that their future does not have to filled with fear and stress.

This month we are celebrating the successful exit of two families, both who attained permenant employment and housing. We are confident that they have the income, skils and support services they need to sustian their jobs and new homes. For over 24 years we have launched families into their new lives, thrilled with thier success and perserverance.
