A never ending problem

By Ian Wilson | Director

Kenya's rainy season didn't happen on many parts of the country.  Those areas considered the country's bread basket that usually get rain even when the arid areas don't, received intermittent rainfall with periods of several weeks at a time of drought.  There is a real likelihood that even the reliable breadbasket won't produce as much food as expected due to drought this year.  This does not help the situation for those parts of the country relying on food support from them. This will probably result in an even bigger influx than usual of people moving south from the driest part of the country where livestock can't survive and crops are literally shrivelling in the ground.   Our work with families and youths from these areas is never likely to end as we have to accept the realities of climate change.  We have to face the fact that, despite our hopes that families would eventually go home after short term help, they are not likely to want to or be able to live in those areas again.  This puts increasing pressure on urban areas and creates more slums.  We hope we can ramp up our programs to meet these increasing needs by training youths to find jobs and live sustainably.
