Dry season

By Ian Wilson | Director

Kenya is a land of extremes.  We go from too much to too little.  And that has been particularly the case with rainfall these past years.  From extreme flooding last year to extreme drought now.  Folks around Kenya are wondering when our next rains will hit.  For many, there is sufficient water available in our rivers and reservoirs to take care of livestock and irrigation while we await the rain expected in a a couple of months' time.  However, for those in the north of Kenya, the rivers are dry and the land is parched.  Only sand proliferates.  The pressure on families to feed and educate their children is intense while they worry about keeping livestock alive during this time.  This results in many youths, young families and children migrating south in search of more opportunities.

This migration is now a regular occurrence and even more noticeable in our dry season.  We do all we can to work in communities receiving new mouths to feed in order to help transition new arrivals and provide training opportunities and education to enable them to earn a living and, hopefully, help their families left behind on the arid regions.
