While we continue helping families displaced by drought, we realise that this is not a one-off or occasional disaster scenario. We are in a situation where drought is becoming the norm and we have had several years in a row of drought in northern Kenya and, even here in Kitale, our rainfall this year has been much less than usual. Our county of TransNzoia has always been considered the "breadbasket" of Kenya due to the lush land and good climate enabling farming to be extremely successful here. This year was a worrying one for farmers.
We have to accept that climate change is now a real i in our country and that families being displaced by drought will needing our help regularly going forward and more detailed plans will have to be made to deal with this instead of treating the issue as the occasional emergency.
To this end, we will have to consider projects beyond our existing family support and training programs but, in the meantime, we welcome your help to improve resilience and provide life skills and vocational training. Our current group of youths will be graduating next month when we will post some photos. Thank you.
