While we continue working with those who have reached our town due to displacement from their home regions caused by drought, we faced new challenges recently caused by an influx of over 2,000 refugees crossing the nearby border from Uganda. These refugees consisted of those fleeing conflicts, drought, hunger and poverty in neighbouring Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania and even Uganda and Sudan. Many different reasons. Many had been in refugee camps in Uganda previously. A rumour gained ground that life would be better in Kenya and almost overnight all these people arrived, mainly women and children; on foot and carrying their entire worldly goods.
We had another humanitarian crisis in our small town which has provided refuge over the years to so many. The Red Cross and UNHCR appealed for help and we did all we could to raise funds and awareness, assist with shopping and procurement of food, drinking water, blankets and warm clothing. All those things we take for granted... At times, the problem was overwhelming for all involved but, after a couple of months of emergency work, buses are now gradually moving most of the refugees to better and more comfortable refugee camps where they can access education for their children.
As they are moving into better surroundings, we now concentrate more fully on longer term solutions for those who remain in Kitale.
