The Old Testament reminds all of us to view the elderly as those to be cared for and respected.
"'You shall rise up before the grayheaded and honor the aged, and you shall revere your God; I am the LORD." (Leviticus)
My mother personified this command, she cared for three gray headed women in her home for many many years while raising five children. But for most of us our lives make us too busy to do this. We have a million reasons, both of my parents died in nursing homes. So as you think of the elderly in Zambia imagine how much more difficult it is for those in poverty to care for the "grayheaded" living next door.
Chikumbuso tries to lighten the load of these women who have been left with their grandchildren to raise and those who have been left with no one at all.
This lovely woman worked hard her whole life and just when she is ready to be cared for by others her daughter passes away and leaves her with a five year old and a seven year old to raise. This woman does not live in her own place she stays in a friends home in a small room unable to pay rent or buy food.
For $350/year Chikumbuso can give her regularly each month her basic needs of food, soap and candles.
Please honor the aged and give to Chikumbuso's Elderly Outreach.
