The century’s worst flooding hit Chennai almost a month back. Bhumi volunteers along with a consortium of organisations worked for immediate relief efforts, helping transport few tonnes of relief materials and hundreds of food packets for relief since the tragedy struck. Bhumi volunteers also helped communities, at relief camps, in rescues, and at collection centres. Bhumi has now shifted focus to long term rehabilitation of educational institutions and the poor.
The Bhumi team operated a Relief Centre for the TN Floods in Chennai between Dec 08 – Dec 20. The relief centre collected relief materials from hundreds of donors and used 100+ volunteers to sort, pack the materials, while another team of volunteers verified requests and fulfilled them.
During this period, the relief centre channelled relief materials to communities and children’s homes in Chennai, Chidambaram, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Panruti, Pondicherry, Tindivanam, Tiruvallur & Virudhachalam.
Along with support from the TN State Government, Bhumi has identified some of the most affected schools in Chennai, and is now actively engaged in fulfilling infrastructural needs like constructing compound walls (that had collapsed due to floods), setting up labs (computer and science) and procuring other resources like sports equipment.
Over thousands of children will benefit from this – helping them not only recover from the shock and aftermath, but also provide them with better conditions to pursue education.
