Relief Program Highlights:

  1. Nearly 2414 people from Tiruvallur District in Tamil Nadu directly benefit from the relief program initiated by United Way Bengaluru and supported by generous donors.
  2. Aid distributed in the form of various food materials and utility items like mosquito nets, mosquito coils, utensils and tarpaulin sheets.
  3. We will shortly initiate the rehabilitation phase to rebuild homes of people that are partially damaged.

Periamma, lives in the lepers’ colony and who is one of the beneficiary said, “Post flood the entire area was infested with mosquitoes and our suffering was unbearable with the continuous mosquito bites. Along with other aid items, we also received mosquito nets and mosquito coil which helped us cope during this distressing phase. Due to the stigma attached with leprosy we were completely cut off from any aid or assistance. We are grateful to United Way Bengaluru and donors for coming to our rescue at the right time.”

UNITED WAY BENGALURU TO THE AID: In order to provide timely intervention, United Way Bengaluru along with their partnering NGOs jumped into action to provide aid to the helpless and needy. Relief work was initiated to ensure that families who had been severely affected by the floods had access to food, clothing and other day to day essential items to help them tide over the initial crisis period. It also aimed to ensure that all these families were able to get back on their feet and gain confidence to recover from the situation.

United Way collected the relief materials from Bengaluru and transported them to relief point in and around Chennai and reached out to the needy communities. The following items were distributed to the beneficiaries:   Water bottles, coffee/tea  powder, milk powder,  milk packets, masala powders, dry ration, chocolates, dry snacks, biscuit packs, rice, wheat powder, blankets, bedsheets, torches, toothpaste, toothbrush,  washing soaps, sanitizers, bathing soaps, sanitary napkins etc. In addition, mosquito nets, mosquito coils, utensils and tarpaulin sheets were purchased and handed over to them.

Beneficiaries:  United Way Bengaluru was able to reach out to most families and individuals in distress which included tribal people living at the periphery, persons affected by leprosy, families who had lost their home to the floods especially among the low income communities.

WAY FORWARD:

Rehabilitation Plans:  We wish to undertake rebuilding of partially damaged houses and provide Educational Assistance to children affected by the floods in the rehabilitation phase. You may continue to support us in the following ways:

  • Rebuilding of partially damaged houses: A survey of damaged house has been undertaken in Tiruvallur Taluk. During the survey it came to light that 1000 houses had been partially damaged and 100 were completely damaged. The Government of Tamil Nadu has allocated funds to re-construct the homes of those people which are completely damaged. We will undertake the rebuilding of partially damaged homes of people. The most underprivileged people such as widows, differently abled, landless, elderly people with no support from children etc will be the beneficiaries.

  • Education Assistance:  We would like to provide Educational Assistance to students (appearing for 10th and 12th Std exams) in Tiruvallur and Pallikaranai area who unfortunately lost their belongings during this time. The support would cover bus pass, school fees, books, stationary, etc. for a year.

United Way Bengaluru takes this opportunity to thank Donors and Global Giving for their timely, prompt and generous donation to help and support the people affected by the floods. We hope you will continue to support us in the rehabilitation phase of rebuilding damaged homes of people living here and help them achieve their basic right to shelter.
