Relief Program Highlights:
Periamma, lives in the lepers’ colony and who is one of the beneficiary said, “Post flood the entire area was infested with mosquitoes and our suffering was unbearable with the continuous mosquito bites. Along with other aid items, we also received mosquito nets and mosquito coil which helped us cope during this distressing phase. Due to the stigma attached with leprosy we were completely cut off from any aid or assistance. We are grateful to United Way Bengaluru and donors for coming to our rescue at the right time.”
UNITED WAY BENGALURU TO THE AID: In order to provide timely intervention, United Way Bengaluru along with their partnering NGOs jumped into action to provide aid to the helpless and needy. Relief work was initiated to ensure that families who had been severely affected by the floods had access to food, clothing and other day to day essential items to help them tide over the initial crisis period. It also aimed to ensure that all these families were able to get back on their feet and gain confidence to recover from the situation.
United Way collected the relief materials from Bengaluru and transported them to relief point in and around Chennai and reached out to the needy communities. The following items were distributed to the beneficiaries: Water bottles, coffee/tea powder, milk powder, milk packets, masala powders, dry ration, chocolates, dry snacks, biscuit packs, rice, wheat powder, blankets, bedsheets, torches, toothpaste, toothbrush, washing soaps, sanitizers, bathing soaps, sanitary napkins etc. In addition, mosquito nets, mosquito coils, utensils and tarpaulin sheets were purchased and handed over to them.
Beneficiaries: United Way Bengaluru was able to reach out to most families and individuals in distress which included tribal people living at the periphery, persons affected by leprosy, families who had lost their home to the floods especially among the low income communities.
