Keeping Senior Citizens and Their Pets Together

By Kate Quigley | Project Leader

Chain of Hope puts a lot of effort into keeping senior citizens and their pets together. It is vital to both the person and the pet. The companionship, the purpose, the enjoyment of a pet in a senior citizen’s later years does so much for the older individual. Their cherished pet is often the thing that keeps senior citizens going! They love their dogs and cats!

Oftentimes, as an animal ages, health issues can arise. Our senior citizens are often on a fixed income and can barely make it. When their pet becomes ill or injured, they have no money to take their beloved pet to the vet. They often have no transportation, too. That’s where Chain of Hope comes in!

Chain of Hope can pay for the vet visit of that animal, if the elderly person cannot pay. We also help with medications, food, kennels, beds, toys and all sorts of other supplies. We also often take the animal into the vet for the person if they are unable to drive. There should not be a reason that a senior citizen has to give up their pet as they age. Often, the person and the pet are aging together and that is a beautiful thing.

It’s hard to sit by, knowing your pet that you love so much is suffering or ill and you can’t do anything about it. What a sad, desperate feeling to have. Once that person makes the call to Chain of Hope, we can jump in and assist them in keeping their pet with them. Whether that means assistance with medical care or help with food and other supplies-we are there for them. We stay plugged in and check back in, just to make sure that everything is going ok.

When it does become time for their senior furry friend to be relieved of suffering, Chain of Hope transports and pays for humane euthanasia of their pet. That is very comforting to the senior citizen to have Chain of Hope involved and walking through everything with them.

Thank you for donating to us so that we can continue to keep beloved pets with their senior owners!
