Mojo with his new momma!
Chain of Hope has a good relationship with the homeless community in Kansas City, Missouri. Many of them know that they can call us for help with an animal and we will respond. We received one such call recently from a man in a homeless camp. He said that someone had brought him a dog and said that the owner had died. He said the dog had stitches and a drain in him and he didn’t feel like he could take care of him. We told him that we would come and get him.
We had to hike a bit back to the camp, which was situated in the woods. A couple of dogs came to greet us. When we found the man who had called, there was this cute little guy in his tent. He was an adorable terrier mix and he had a drain and stitches in him. He was also scratching constantly and was missing some hair. They told us his name was Mojo. We told them that we could take him and that we would get him into the vet and take good care of him. We thanked them for calling us. We sure wouldn’t have wanted Mojo to fall through the cracks!
We found out that the owner had died. Mojo had had a large abcess that was not treated and it had burst open. That is why he had the drain and stitches in him. He'd had a hard time obviously.
Mojo went to our veterinarian and was neutered, vaccinated, treated for parasites and his drain and stitches were removed. We treated his skin issue, which was attributed to a flea infestation. He needed medicated baths and some medication to help get his itching under control. Mojo was shy when he first came in. He wasn’t sure who to trust and so much had happened to him. We understood and we were very patient with him.
These days, Mojo is like an entirely different dog! He is healthy and happy and much loved. His personality has really come out and it does our hearts good to see him so joyful and loving life! He loves, loves, loves toys-especially squeaky toys! He's so fun to play with as he discovers the joys of life! He was recently adopted into his forever home and he is doing fantastic! We are so happy for little Mojo!
Mojo isn’t the first dog that we have rescued from the homeless community and he won’t be the last. We are grateful that we have built trust with them and they know they can call Chain of Hope for help. They understand the need to get an animal to safety and medical care, if needed. We appreciate them helping out Chain of Hope with the animals of Kansas City.
