Pets are vital to many senior citizens' lives. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pets “increase opportunities for exercise and outdoor activities, contribute to better cognitive function in older adults, and provide more opportunities to socialize." Having a pet is also linked to health benefits such as decreased blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels. Pet ownership is also associated with reduced feelings of loneliness and anxiety.
Having a pet gives a senior citizen a sense of purpose, someone to nuture and love, and increases social interaction among seniors. What's better to strike up a conversation about other than your cat or dog that you love so much?
The pet gives the senior love, companionship, security, routine and purpose. Chain of Hope does everything they can to keep seniors and their pets together. We provide medical care, food, treats, toys, kennels, dog beds-whatever a senior citizen needs to keep their beloved pet with them for the rest of their lives. Many elderly people tell us how grateful they are for our help so that they can keep their pet. Their cat or dog is often their only family member that they have. They tell us that without us, they wouldn't be able to keep their best friend with them. We know that the best thing for both the pet and the person is for them to remain together.
Because of your continued support, Chain of Hope is able to provide many resources to our elderly community and their pets. We will not allow a senior and their precious animal to be separated at the end of life just because the older person is struggling financially. We are here for them and will continue to be. Thank you for making that possible.
