Summer is the most expensive season for Chain of Hope to operate in. Since we service primarily chained, outside dogs in the inner city, we need a lot of products to help combat the insects that attack these poor dogs.
Most of the dogs that live outside have their ears bleeding from the flies that attack them. Once there’s even just a little bit of blood, the flies are relentless and the dogs’ ears just get worse and worse.
Chain of Hope provides fly spray and fly traps for the dogs. Fly traps are very important-they attract the flies into the bag where they are trapped and keep them off of the dog. A new one needs to be hung every few weeks. They are $5 a trap and we hang hundreds of them each summer, trying to keep the chained dogs more comfortable.
Of course, we provide education about the need to scoop up the feces to prevent or lessen the fly problem in the first place. Some people are good about it and some people just don’t make any effort.
We also provide flea prevention treatment because the fleas are just as relentless as the flies and make the dogs miserable. We educate about the need for flea prevention, treating their yard for fleas, bathing their dog, etc.
Many of the dogs that Chain of Hope visits in the summer have no water because they knock their buckets over and the owners usually just blame it on the dog. We provide water buckets and clips to clip the handles of the buckets to the fence so the dog cannot tip it over. We show them how they can get an old tire and set the water bucket in the middle of the tire to keep it from tipping over.
We also give out free wire kennels so that people can bring their dogs inside, even if they are not normally inside. We tell people that they just have to get them in when the heat index is in the 90’s and 100’s.
Chain of Hope hustles all summer long taking care of the outside chained dogs, who suffer in the hot, humid, Missouri summers. We couldn’t do it without you! Thank you for your support!
