Teaching Children in the Urban Core How to Care for Animals

By Kate Quigley | Project Leader

Education about spaying and neutering is essential
Education about spaying and neutering is essential

We at Chain of Hope, know that it is essential to educate the children in the inner city about how to care for animals. We have to change the way animals are viewed sometimes, which is as a piece of property or simply a dog to bark when someone’s around. Chain of Hope volunteers are committed to changing this concept and guiding people towards valuing their animal and making a connection with it. It is a difficult challenge, but Chain of Hope is up to it.

If you grew up with the pit bull chained to the tree in the back yard to be the “guard” dog, then you have a particular view of animals, most likely. We strive to point out that animals need empathy and concern, that they suffer and feel pain and fear, just like we do.

It never fails, when we pull up in our van to help the dogs, children gather around and ask us what we’re doing, It’s an excellent opportunity to show these children that these animals need so much more than the bare necessities. They need love, understanding, interaction, freedom from chaining, a new toy, something to chew on and a lot of other things. We explain what spaying and neutering is and why it’s so important, both for the animal’s health and because of how full the shelters are. It is these lessons that we try to impart on the children. They love it when we give them our toy bucket and let them pick out some new toys for their dog. We get them involved, so that they can learn by doing.

We love the curiosity of the kids. At least we are modeling for them how their animal should be cared for-they may have never seen this before. We are planting a seed, as we watch a new generation grow and become more compassionate. Because after Chain of Hope has been there, then they know better!

We are changing a mindset. It is slow, but we are making progress. We’ve seen dogs that used to be chained outside become house dogs, with Chain of Hope’s help, supplies (such as indoor crates), coaching and understanding. Your donations make this possible-we could not do this without you. Our mission is to better the treatment of animals in the urban core of Kansas City. Reaching the children is of the utmost importance for change and Chain of Hope volunteers reach them everyday. Thank you for keeping us out there.
