The dog days of summer have passed, and in KC the heat was record breaking. COH outreach volunteers provided over 1000 encounters to animals needing assistance. 780 dogs and 329 cats were assisted, many just to survive.
Now we are gearing up for winter and have just held our first winter outreach event. After seeing more than typical numbers of dogs coming into the program with Parvo, we set out and brought low cost vaccinations directly into the community, vaccinating over 100 dogs. We also provided free hay to at least as many owners to insulate their dog houses.
Outreach events in the community bring people in. We talk to them, find out what their situation is and what their needs are. For one family, we learned of a litter of puppies. Two were left that they planned to give away. We talked, and later she came back with those pups, and released them to Chain of Hope. Both, as it turns out, had Parvo and we began treatment immediately. One little brave soul did not make it. The same fate was prevented for the animals vaccinated that day. The other pup is recovering, thriving, and will soon have a forever home with a family.
We made an impact that day, making a difference in the lives of more than 100 animals and families we touched. All in just a few hours, on just one day.
