Chagam Nunnery & Bagam Village Relief Fund, Nepal

Summary

The 250+ nuns of Chagam and the Sherpa people in the adjacent village have lived a symbiotic life for many years. Nestled in the mountains in Sindhupalchuk, Nepal, they are accustomed to rough terrain, rocky farming, sparse access to healthcare, clean water, and education. The April 25th earthquake changed their already precarious living situation to one of total destruction. Our current plan is to provide food, medication, construction materials for reconstruction and temporary shelter.

Challenge

Landslides prematurely made roads impassible, almost all homes, the nunnery, schools, and crop storage facilities were entirely demolished or rendered unusable due to extensive damage. The nuns and most of the Sherpa families were without any emergency aid until early May when RMF in collaboration with a local Nepali NGO, organized a helicopter relief mission bringing tarps, food, water filtration systems, medication, and basic supplies. Much more help is needed.

Solution

RMF will bring in more food and medical supplies and construction materials to build a temporary communal shelter for the nuns before monsoon starts (as soon as possible). The Sherpa community has offered to supply the labor to do this in exchange for also receiving some building supplies, whereby they will complete the repairs to their own homes or build temporary shelters for themselves. Materials were selected in collaboration with local architect/engineer.

Long-Term Impact

RMF will also spend the 4-month monsoon period meeting with architects, suppliers, village representatives, and nunnery representative to come up with long-term rebuild plan, and begin once the rain has stopped. The idea is to rebuild efficiently, effectively, culturally appropriately, equitably for the entire community, leveraging local resources and work force, and to create a much greater community resilience than existed before the earthquake.
