Before RMF opened a health clinic in January 2016, the villagers of Arupokhari, Gorkha had to travel 4-5 hours to the nearest hospital for proper medical attention. Now through our initiative, the people of Arupokhari and nearby villages have access to 24/7, free health services, including medicines at a highly subsidized rate. One year later, in March 2017, the RMF Health Clinic has treated 7,568 patients, averaging 504 patients a month.
This remote area suffers from poor infrastructure and difficulty accessing health care (the nearest hospital is 4-5 hours away). Typhoid, diarrhea, burns, cut injuries, intestinal worms, and toothaches are some of the key medical complaints within the community. Due to the lack of essential medicines and health awareness, children are dying from easily preventable illnesses like diarrhea. Malnutrition rates are alarming. Births within a healthcare facility are extremely rare.
Our clinic staff is currently providing primary health care and 24-hour emergency services. A permanent building will be constructed in order to provide birthing center facilities. The birthing center will provide perinatal care and deliver critical health services to homebound expectant mothers. Outreach clinics will deliver medical care, immunizations, and health education to schools and remote villages. The clinic is managed by a committee formed of representatives from the community.
Our goal is to bring critical medical care to 10,000 people of Arupokhari and surrounding villages. The long-term impact of providing health care to these communities is to ensure happier, healthier children and adults. Community members will have a higher quality of life and be better able to break the cycle of poverty.
