We jumped the gun!

iRobot at the STEM Carnival

When we last spoke, I told you to "Look out summer, here we come!" But we still had some year end activities to experience and share. So this newsletter gives you a snapshot of our last month of school year activities. We will have a lot of great stories to share from the summer in the coming months...

On May 28th, CBM celebrated the final culminating activity for the school year with the 3rd Annual STE(A)M Carnival. Our theme, Elements of Design, was comprised of student-led activity centers which showcased 3D Modeling, Video Game Design, Flight Simulation, comic book animation, SCRATCH/KODU and Law of Thermodynamics for Savoy students. Our newest and most exciting addition was iRobot, who communicated and interacted with students through his iPad!

The STE(A)M (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) Carnival allows CBM SLAM to increase opportunities for African American students entering into engineering by exposing them to the excitement of STEM at an early age.

You may remember that students read John Lewis' graphic novel, March. Well, they enjoyed it so much, they reached out to his co-author, Andrew Aydin, through social media. (Isn't Twitter amazing?)  The students posted pictures of themselves reading the novel, as well as questions and comments to Mr. Aydin. Not only did he re-tweet their pictures, but he liked many of the their comments. Staff is hoping to arrange for Mr. Aydin to come and meet with our students next year.

On June 6th, SLAM students were transported to the 11th century through an excursion to the Medieval Times (Baltimore Castle). To prepare for the experience and learn more about this time period, students watched digital clips of historical plays and creations to learn about medieval lords, kings, ladies and their way of living.

Students also worked their physical bodies through an Ultimate Frisbee Clinic which introduced the basic skills of the sport in a fun positive environment. Members of the Washington Area Frisbee Association, Coaches Emily and Laura, engaged students in numerous games to develop disc fundamentals, backhand throws, forward hand flicks and athletic skills -- always highlighting teamwork, cooperation and sportsmanship.

We also had a Skateboard Science Clinic presented by our very own SLAM staffer, Phillip T. Phillip immersed students in hands-on exploration of physics in motion, while learning about potential and kinetic energy, friction, and inertia through skateboarding. Who knew skateboarding could be so educational?

Finally, “Reaching New Heights…Together” was the theme that set the tone for students' Fifth Grade Promotion and Recognition Ceremony. CBM is proud to announce that all SLAM graduates were recipients of Academic Achievement Awards in the areas of reading, mathematics, creative arts, excellence in science, and outstanding attendance. Most notably, Jionni A., Kenyatta R., Neveah A., Teona B., and Kechelle S. received both Presidential Excellence and Principals Awards. Not surprisingly, SLAM graduates are entering challenging middle schools for the upcoming school year. We wish them all the best!

That's all for now. We'll tell you about our summer in the next report...
