Greetings from Concerned Black Men!
Our CBM Summer Camp ended in August, and most of our campers transitioned into our after-school program, the Saving Lives and Minds Academic Performance Program, affectionately known as SLAM.
Together, the Summer Camp and SLAM provide a year-round program opportunity for Savoy Elementary students living in Ward 8 of Washington, DC to increase their math and reading grades, improve their school attendance and be in a safe and nurturing environment supported by caring adults.
SLAM takes place Monday through Friday from 3:00-6:00 pm, providing educational enrichment and personal development activities in a fun, family-like environment.
The program stresses leadership development and gives students a voice in its creation and implementation. Since September, the youth have developed their ground rules and are working on their afterschool clubs.
With Halloween in mind, last month students engaged in a “Spooky Science” workshop, led by our friends at Club Scientific. In it, they created heat changing, color-sensitive worms; Vampire Veins; glow-in-the-dark Jack O'Lanterns and vanishing polymer ghost eyes.
I’ve included some pictures from our Academic Field Day, where students had to answer science or math questions as they participated in the games, as well as the Halloween Party.
Thank you again for your support of our youth. Our student reporters will be back in action in future reports to keep you informed of how the year unfolds.
