Some students in our inclusion project are nonverbal, but that does not stop them from communicating with their peers using the means of alternative communication: either iPad communication software or PECS communication book.
Opportunity to communicate in the natural environment means the WORLD to nonverbal kids, and thankfully their classmates are best communication partners.
Our classroom stands for a “Resource” classroom for a reason. Lately, we had discussed what the reason for having a “Resource” classroom with neurotypical kids is, and they learned that “Resource” classroom is needed for training purposes. Because we have the Resource” classroom, we can train different skills in a friendly environment.
In a case when a child is nonverbal we use PECS communication book. And so we had a short briefing and a masterclass on how to use PECS cards.
We also played a tricky game: students had to ask one another for help without saying a word. It turned out to be somewhat complicated, and all the kids noticed that.
We thank Antonina, one of our most experienced tutors, for such a useful and entertaining lesson.
We thank you for your donations! Every grain helps.
