During the year ended 30 June 2026, the Rainforest Conservation Foundation (RCF) continued its long-term Cassowary Corridor – Wet Tropics of Far North Queensland project, protecting and maintaining strategically important rainforest habitat across the Daintree Rainforest.
Throughout the reporting period, RCF maintained approximately 330.61 acres (133.8 hectares) of conservation properties across the Daintree, with $49,035 expended on property maintenance and conservation activities. These properties comprise areas of intact and restored rainforest that contribute to maintaining habitat and connectivity for the Southern Cassowary and other native wildlife.
A key outcome during the year was the continued maintenance of the properties in a weed-free condition, protecting both established rainforest and previously restored areas from invasive vegetation and supporting natural regeneration. Maintaining these areas is critical to protecting the significant investment already made in rainforest restoration and ensuring that habitat quality continues to improve over time.
Encouragingly, RCF continues to observe cassowary activity across the properties, demonstrating their ongoing use as habitat and movement areas. These observations reinforce the importance of maintaining connected areas of suitable rainforest within the broader Daintree landscape.
The project has therefore continued to achieve its primary objectives of protecting existing rainforest, maintaining restored habitat, controlling invasive weeds, supporting cassowary habitat and movement, and improving the long-term ecological integrity of the Cassowary Corridor.
RCF remains committed to the ongoing management of these properties. Future activities will continue to focus on weed prevention and control, monitoring rainforest condition and wildlife activity, maintaining restored areas, and undertaking further habitat restoration where opportunities arise.
2025–26 key outcomes: 330.61 acres (133.8 ha) of rainforest conservation land maintained; $49,035 invested in conservation and property management; restored and intact rainforest maintained in weed-free condition; and continued cassowary activity observed across RCF properties.
