The Owona-Kellogg Foundation (OKF) is a community-led organization working with local leaders and community groups in Cameroon's South-West Region. The organization carried out a needs assessment of 735 households in the region and found severe poverty, unemployment, and food insecurity after years of Anglophone crisis (2016 to date). This project will provide 50,000 XAF (85 dollars) cash grants and coaching support to people facing extreme poverty to start businesses in Mbakwa Supe village.
Years of conflict have disrupted farming, trade, movement, and local employment in Mbakwa Supe and nearby communities. According to the Owona Kellogg Foundation (OKF)'s assessment, 91.1% of respondents reported little or no regular income, 90.5% identified lack of start-up capital as a major barrier, and 68% named hunger and food shortages as their most urgent concern. Many households lack the modest resources needed to rebuild a livelihood.
OKF will use its needs assessment, community consultation, and transparent verification to identify conflict-affected families facing the greatest economic hardship. Each selected participant will receive a 50,000 XAF productive-grant cash transfer, basic financial guidance, and periodic follow-up support. Cash gives participants flexibility to invest in the farm inputs, inventory, tools, transport, or materials that best fit their livelihood.
A flexible grant can help a household restart or strengthen farming, petty trade, food processing, an artisan service, or another locally viable activity. As participants rebuild income, they can better meet food and household needs, reduce reliance on harmful coping strategies, and reinvest in productive work. Follow-up support will encourage responsible grant use and connections to local savings and peer-support networks.
