THINK has been working with 10 communities helping community members to develop action plans on how to prevent Sexual Exploitation and Abuse of children, especially young girls in their homes, at school and in their communities. This project is funded by UNICEF. Our achievements in this report are:

10 Community Action Groups formed in 10 communities
5 Youth Centers made functional and youth have formed drama groups to participate in an awareness campaign on preventing SEA and SGBV
Parents are becoming more protective of their children
Awareness raised on the locations of Centers where services are provided of victims and survivors of rape
THINK safe home received 4 new cases this month

The Day of the African Child was observed in Liberia and we raised attention of stopping Child Marriage. The Planned Parenthood Association of Liberia (PPAL) held a special program in Monrovia where a Manifesto was presented to one of the female legislators to ensure that girls are protected from Forced and Early Marriage. The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection held the national program in the port city of Buchanan.

Schools have closed for the 2016/2017 academic year. 20 children benefitting from school assistance all passed to the next level of their education. We have one visually impaired student graduating this year.

Narrative Report April 15, 2017

THINK Safe Homes received 13 new admissions of human trafficking cases referred by World Hope International, 1 rape case referred by the One Stop Center at Duport Road One Stop Center and 2 in contact with the law (Run Away cases).
Age disaggregation: (0 – 5) 0, (6 – 12) 13 (13 – 17) 3, (> 18) 0 residents. The residents went for follow up hospital visits and police investigations. The 10 residents received individual counseling and were participants of group - counseling. The survivors participated in creative art, recreation and educational activities. At present, there are 10 survivors in the safe home. Three girls referred to THINK August 27, 2016, for protection from Female Genital Cutting were reunified with caregivers March 25, 2017. The girls are happy in their new home and have been enrolled in school.
THINK provided literacy and numeracy classes for the 10 clients that are divided into three levels using the Alternative to Basic Education (ABE) curriculum.
All of the children received initial medical assessment and had follow up medical visits and follow up visits to the police at the offices of the Women and Children Protection Section (WACPS) at various Police Stations.

THINK continues to supervise and provide medical and psychosocial counseling as part of the team at the One Stop Center for survivors of SGBV in two of the five facilities in Monrovia. During the month of March 2017, 39 survivors reported of which 2 were adult women, 1 male and 36 females all children under 18 years of age.

During the month of March, 2017, a team from The Life Center Family Worship of Pennsylvania, USA visited and ministered to the residents and staff of THINK. They gave donations of books and educational materials, clothing, food items toys and toiletries in three barrels.
THINK safe home also received a donation of 50 dresses, under clothes, and toys from a philanthropist group in London. Our sincere thanks and appreciation goes out to all who continue to donate to THINK. Gifts in kind are always used by the residents most of whom come with just the clothes that they arrive in.

“Caring For Children Affected by Ebola”

Achievements

After participating in a short term four-month training project developed and funded by UN/Government of Liberia Joint Program on Adolescent Girls,

450 adolescent girls from 6 communities (Bensonville 100, Careysburg 100, Totoquellie 100, Soul Clinic 50, Gaza 50 and Wroh 50), will be graduating on separate days between February 12 – 16, 2017.

The project helped girls to know their rights, participate in basic literacy, acquire business skills, life skills, learn about HIV/AIDS, Sexual and Gender Based Violence prevention and response and interact with each other using sports, music and drama.

THINK has been able to continue providing services to vulnerable children that come in contact or conflict with the law in minor offences. We were also able provide shelter and protection for three cases of internationally trafficked young women and their children (one from Malaysia, and two from Ivory Coast).

THINK Safe Home provided services to 10 survivors of sexual violence and Trafficking and the THINK Juvenile Transit Center provided shelter and services to 15 children that came in contact or conflict with the law from December 1, 2016 until January 18, 2017.

Success Story

In 2012, a 9 years old Fistula survivor was referred to THINK for Psychosocial care and support. She had received reconstructive surgery at the Phebe Hospital in Bong County (central Liberia), and her parents did not want to take her back into their home or in their community.

When we received the information, we started looking for a Foster family for the girl and after a month in the THINK safe home, she was placed with her new family. THINK has provided school assistance for her and she is now in the sixth grade and doing well in school, at home and in the community. Her biological parents came only one time to meet the Foster family.

This little girls and many others like her, are appreciative of donors and partners of UNFPA for putting a smile on their faces again as they learn to become productive citizens of Liberia.
