Each day, hundreds of people just like you take on a new role - caring for a family member who has a disability, a long term health condition or is affected by the impacts of ageing. They take on that role with love and commitment, but who is caring for them and helping them with the impacts of caring on their own lives: social isolation, poor health, mental distress, economic hardship and no chance for a break? Carers Worldwide breaks that cycle through recognition and targeted local support.
Caring for a sick or disabled loved one is emotionally rewarding but also takes its toll on the physical, mental, social, and economic well-being of the person providing care. The challenges of caring are a global phenomenon, but carers in low and middle-income countries are more hard hit due to inadequate social services, limited support systems, and poor healthcare. Our research in South Asia has found 85% of carers worry about not having enough money and 89% experience anxiety or depression.
We establish local partnerships capable of embedding the Carers Worldwide model, train local community members to provide carer support, and equip carers as active changemakers, not just beneficiaries. Along with this grassroots approach we work with local governments to secure recognition of the role of carers and the range of issues impacting them with a view to achieving policy change and carer inclusion into existing policies. This dual approach is driving change, with carers at the centre.
Supporting Carers Worldwide will mean we can: - set up carers support groups to reduce loneliness and support emotional wellbeing - create access to carer-friendly health services - set up local counselling services - set carers up in income generating activities which will strengthen household financial security - get child carers back to school - develop high quality alternative care provision to give carers a break - strengthen collective voice of carers to achieve recognition and support
