Thanks to the generosity of partners like you, a newly-opened Care Kitchen in San Isidro, Leyte is now cooking up daily nutritious lunch meals for all the 5,000+ school children enrolled in its 29 public elementary schools.
As early as 2AM every single day, parent volunteers gather in this kitchen to help with the operations: from peeling and chopping vegetables to cooking huge cauldrons of rice and viand.
By 8AM, habal-habal (customized motorbikes) drivers start to arrive and load up crates upon crates of colorful lunchboxes, which will then be delivered to the schools - some of which are located in remote mountainous areas that are around 2 hours away.
In the schools, teachers supervise the distribution of lunchboxes and make sure that the children wash their hands and say grace before meals. The kids also contribute as they take responsibility for washing their lunchboxes before sending them back to the kitchen.
As they do this, they wear big smiles on their faces. Not only are their stomachs filled, but their hearts are too, aware that they are being cared for everyday.
San Isidro may be a fourth-class municipality that's been weighed down time and again by poverty and disasters like Super typhoon Haiyan, but it's one that's determined to end hunger among its young. Through the Care Kitchen program, people begin to see and get inspired by what can be achieved when everyone starts to care and work together.
Care with us on MARCH 18th: GlobalGiving's Bonus Matching Day!
In the Philippines, there are many more other towns like San Isidro, with millions more kids hungry for food, caring, and a fair chance at a better life. Help us bring our Care Kitchens to them, so that they can move on from this hunger and start to imagine their futures instead.
Care with us on March 18 as GlobalGiving hosts a Bonus Day. Whatever you give on March 18th, 30% of it will be matched by GlobalGiving! Matching begins at 9:00:01 EDT and lasts until funds run out or 23:59:59 EDT. Take this opportunity to amplify our impact and expand our reach. And more importantly, grab this chance to bring smiles to more faces.
When we do things together, we can do so much more. Hunger ends where caring begins.
